The inspiration for this project focused on combating urban blight through creating a modular retail and commercial development. The goals were to find a creative way to fill voids in the urban fabric, and to create a sense of place that is an incubator for small businesses. The building block is designed around a modular prefabricated structure that can be configured in multiple ways and adapted to a variety of site conditions. The design team found ways to minimize the required site improvements while maximizing components that can be picked up and moved. This allows the owner to take advantage of empty lots in various locations on a semi-permanent basis.
