In the fall of 2011, the Kimball Art Museum launched an international architectural design competition, inviting architects from around the world to submit designs for transforming the museum. Blalock and Partners teamed with Brooks + Scarpa Architects out of Los Angeles, CA, and the team was amongst the five shortlisted architects for the project. The concept for the design was inspired by Park City’s seemingly endless blue sky, and was dubbed the “Kimball Cloud”. The design team’s desire was to perpetually bring the uniqueness of the sky directly into the space of the city, allowing the user to forge a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the fundamental, yet delicate relationships that exist between themselves, the natural world, its vital resources, and our collective cultures.
